Adi Kailash & Om Parvat Yatra: 15 Questions Every Yatri Asks
ByHimanshu, Founder· Pithoragarh ·

Fifteen questions we answer on WhatsApp nearly every day, collected in one place. If your question is not here, the WhatsApp button below reaches the team directly.
The yatra itself
1. Is the yatra difficult? It is vehicle-based — no long trekking — but the roads are rough, days are long, and two days cross 4,300 m. Basic fitness plus a sensibly paced itinerary is enough for most healthy travellers — our 7-day routes add a full acclimatisation day at Gunji.
2. Is Adi Kailash the same as Kailash Mansarovar? No — Adi Kailash (Chhota Kailash) is in India, in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. It is a sacred mirror of Mount Kailash, reachable without a Chinese visa, at a fraction of the cost of the Tibet yatra. The full comparison covers which yatra suits whom.
3. How many days do I need? Seven days from Pithoragarh or Kathgodam is the standard safe itinerary with the acclimatisation day at Gunji. Our 8-day ex-Delhi route spends its extra days on the temple circuit home rather than a second day at Gunji, and the 4-day Express cuts deepest — choose those only if you are comfortable with a quicker climb.
4. Can I do both Adi Kailash and Om Parvat in one trip? Yes — every standard itinerary includes both: Adi Kailash from Jolingkong and Om Parvat from Nabhidhang, on separate days.
Permits and paperwork
5. Do I need a permit? Yes, an Inner Line Permit for every yatri — our permit guide covers the process, and we handle the application for our travellers.
6. What documents should I carry? Aadhaar (original + copies), spare passport photos, and your medical fitness certificate.
Practical matters
7. Is there mobile network? Reliable till Dharchula, effectively absent beyond. Tell your family to expect silence on the darshan days.
8. Are there ATMs? The last dependable ATMs are at Dharchula — carry sufficient cash from there onwards.
9. What is the food like? Fresh, simple vegetarian meals at homestays. Carry your own dry snacks for the jeep days.
10. Where do we stay? Guesthouses and homestays at Dharchula and Gunji, sharing basis. Clean, warm bedding — but basic; this is a border valley.
11. What about bathrooms? Attached bathrooms at Dharchula usually; at Gunji, expect shared facilities and bucket hot water.
Health and people
12. Can seniors do the yatra? Yes, regularly — with a doctor’s clearance and honest self-assessment. Our escorts carry a pulse oximeter and monitor everyone at Gunji.
13. Can children come? We recommend age 12+, purely because of altitude and long jeep days.
14. What if someone falls ill at altitude? Mild symptoms are managed with rest and fluids at Gunji; anything more and the escort begins descent immediately — altitude decisions are the escort’s call, always.
15. When should I book? June and September departures fill first. Booking 3–4 weeks ahead leaves comfortable time for permits.
